Thousands of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) at substations are accessed via dial-up: can they be secure and NERC-compliant? This presentation will focus on new and legacy equipment at substations; offer a brief historical perspective and a look at new security efforts. Different facets of securing dial-up connections will be discussed, including multilayer authentication, aging parameters, threat detection, and equipment and user account management. This session also will analyze features available today for substations with regard to their security capabilities, implementation, equipment, personnel costs, ease of management, high availability, and compliance with NERC standards.
