Professional Engineering Paper
1. ELIGIBILITY
Contestant must be an engineer at a critical infrastructure company.

2. CONTENT
Technical engineering subject related to the use of telecom at utilities. Possible subjects include but are not limited to:
  • SCADA / Process Control Security
  • Fiber Optics
  • Substation Automation
  • Broadband over Power Line (BPL)
  • Spectrum Use / Allocation
  • Mobile Data
  • Antenna Issues
  • Emerging Telecom Technologies
  • Applied Utility Telecom Technology
3. FORMAT OF ABSTRACT

a. Organization of Abstract
One to two paragraphs outlining final paper ideas are to be submitted first, no later than January 31, 2006. Abstracts should be in one column with font sizes no larger than 10 point and no smaller than 8 point. Abstracts should highlight the theme of the projected paper.

b. Judging
Judges will review submissions and determine which abstracts should be further developed into papers.

4. FORMAT OF PAPER
Need to submit an electronic copy to marketing@utc.org in the following format:

a. Title Page
On the first page of the entry shall be stated the title of the paper, full name of the contestant, contact information, name of company. A signature block containing the signature of the contestant is necessary. This page will not be included when submitted to the judges.

b. Organization of Paper
Papers need to be in two columns with font sizes no larger than 10 point and no smaller than 8 point. Excluding title page, papers should be no longer than 4 pages in length. Papers should follow a logical pattern and conform to good engineering paper or technical written standards.

c. Grading System
Papers shall be graded according to the following schedule of points shown in the scoring sheet.
  • Importance of the subject to the field of utility telecom. 15 points
  • Proper use and/or interpretation of engineering information or principles relating to the subject. 15 points
  • Originality and/or thoroughness of study. 15 points
  • Validity and worth of conclusions. 10 points
  • Clarity, simplicity and ease of reading 15 points
  • Style ­ organization, straight-forwardness, coherence, grammatical accuracy 15 points
  • Appearance and neatness, including quality of drawings, charts and photographs. 15 points

5. SUBMISSION DATES
  • January 31, 2006 - Abstract Submission
  • February 14, 2006 - Abstract Notification, notified semifinalists will be asked to complete their paper
  • March 31, 2006 - Papers Submission Deadline
  • May 1, 2006 - Finalist Notification - finalists will be asked to attend poster board presentation at UTC TELECOM 2006 from May 21 - 24, 2006 in Tampa, FL.
